A Little Bit About Us…

Jeff McCauley, President & Owner

I began my career in horticulture at the age of 15 while working in a retail garden center in Dallas. I put myself through college at Texas A&M while doing lawn maintenance under the Shades of Green name. Upon graduating in 1979, I moved back to Dallas to continue developing my company. Over the last 35+ years, we have experienced many changes in our industry, with the latest being water conservation.
Jeff McCauley, President & Owner
Shades of Green, Inc. has always offered the most knowledgeable staff and the best plants available that are well adapted for the North Texas area. I spend the majority of my day as a Landscape Designer, which is rewarding and challenging. I have to balance between what plants and trees our customers think they want in their yard, and what I know will really grow best in their yard. There are so many elements involved in an exceptional landscape plan, and my goal is to provide each customer with the best options designed specifically for their yard. What I love about the nursery and landscape business is that there is always something new that is being introduced, and I strive to stay on top of the latest trends. Personally, I have always had a taste for the small town life, so for the past 25 years I have lived in the country and currently reside just outside of Celina. And one of my favorite things to do after leaving Shades of Green each day is to come home and work in my own yard. I use it as a "testing ground" for many of the plants that we sell. I let my own yard be the guinea pig, so that your yard gets what I know will grow and flourish with the right care.
Brice Creelman, Grower

Born and raised in upstate New York, I discovered my love for horticulture as a young boy while working on a farm that happened to have a glass greenhouse where orchids where being grown. Working with the plants and learning about them was much more fun than feeding the cows! I moved to Texas after high school and worked at North Haven Gardens for seven years. After getting married, we returned to New York only to realize after five long winters and no chicken-fried steak that we wanted to return to Texas. I then worked at Tawakoni Plant Farms in east Texas before coming to Shades of Green in November of 2000. I love native plants and enjoy being a part of Shades of Green’s growing operation in Collinsville. My wife and I live in Van Alsytne, Texas, with our cat.

Robin Roberts, Nursery Manager

I’m a Native Texan raised in Richardson, and I attended J.J. Pearce High School. When I was 8 years old, I made a veggie garden to grow pumpkins in my folks’ back yard. Lo and behold - four months later I ended up in the newspaper with my pumpkins. I guess that’s when it all started. I’ve been in the plant business in some way or another for over 30 years. Many of those years were spent at Cornelius Nursery and Calloway’s Nursery. I am a Texas Master Certified Nurseryman and enjoy helping others make their yard beautiful and sustainable. I’d love for you to come in to Shades of Green, and we can talk about what we can do for your yard!

Cameron McCauley, Landscape Design and Nursery Sales

I started working for Shades of Green in 2007 trimming trees at the tree farm on hot summer days. I moved into planting trees and installing landscapes during high school and college. I received a BA degree from the University of Arkansas in 2013 and pondered what was on the horizon for the next phase of my life. I didn’t want to be confined to a desk and computer, and also wanted to earn my keep through hard work, just like my dad had done for 30+ years. While having a parent as a boss has its ups and downs, I definitely feel a sense of pride in what I am doing at Shades of Green. I am currently one of the Landscape Designers, and I love the creativity of the landscape design process. I strive to continue to learn about all aspects of the business from my colleagues to better help serve our excellent customers. So, come on in and let me show you some beautiful native plants for your garden!

Jarratt Calvert, Operations Manager

I got into this industry the old-fashioned way...I married into it! In April 2015, I was lucky enough to call Rebecca McCauley (Jeff's daughter) my wife. After months of discussing the possibility of working at Shades of Green, we decided to make the move where I would oversee the operations side of nursery sales. I am passionate about customer service and making sure the customer's needs are priority number one. Being raised in a family of farmers, I learned from an early age the importance of agriculture. I'm excited to continue to broaden my knowledge in the garden industry.

Rob Wier, Former Owner

Rob retired from Shades of Green in January of 2014 and moved to the Hill Country. For years, Rob was an integral part of caring for the needs and concerns of our loyal customers. As a native of Dallas, he has lived in and watched the Metroplex grow all his life. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1978 with a B.S. in Horticulture. After graduating from A&M, longtime friends Rob and Jeff set out to create a nursery that the community could count on to give trusted advice and promote "The Right Plant for the Right Place." Rob forever holds a place in the hearts of Shades of Green's staff and customers!
